The Art of Lash Retention: Factors, Tips, and Techniques for Long-Lasting Extensions

We can all agree that lash extensions have become one of the most prominent and essential  part of our beauty maintenance, enhancing our natural beauty by adding volume and length to our natural eyelashes. However, one of the key concerns for lash enthusiasts is RETENTION! How long your extensions would last you and is it worth your hard earned coins?  In this blog we'll explore the various factors that impact lash retention and provide detailed advice on lash maintenance for longer-lasting extensions.

Factors Affecting Lash Retention

Several factors can affect how long your lash extensions last:

  1. Lash Growth Cycle: Natural lashes go through a growth cycle, and when the natural lash sheds, the extension attached to it will fall off as well. The rate at which your lashes grow and shed can impact the longevity of your extensions. It’s important to know that every single one of us have a different  growth cycle.  Some peoples lashes grow and shed much faster than others. I advise that you get familiar with the rate at which your natural lashes grow and shed at so you can know if your extensions are shedding prematurely or just following your growth cycle.

Another important thing to take into account is in a similar way that animals lose their heavy coat for the hotter weather, as humans, we also shed our hair (including our lashes) for the change in temperatures to come. Summer weather can cause some clients’ skin to sweat and produce more oils which will affect retention, and Winter weather with its lower humidity levels can cause lashes to become more brittle and fall out easier. In a regular lash shed cycle, we can lose up to 5-7 natural lashes per day, however this can increase dramatically in Spring and Autumn in preparation for the temperature changes. This is what’s referred to as ‘Lash Shedding Season’.

The loss of lashes often goes unnoticed for people without lash extensions as the natural lashes are so fine, but when you have individual lash extensions or fans attached to your natural lashes, it can become more noticeable. It is for this reason we need to make sure that both lash artists and their clients are educated on their natural lash cycle. (Amy Gower, 2020)

    2. Lash Technician's Skill and Technique: A skilled lash technician, well-versed and educated in proper application techniques, plays a significant role in ensuring long-lasting extensions. Improper application can lead to poor retention. You must shop around and find a suitable lash tech for you. Every lash technician wont be for you. We all have different skills and techniques. Find one that suits you!

  1. Quality of Lash Products: High-quality lash extensions and adhesives are crucial for better retention. Subpar products may not bond well with natural lashes or could cause irritation, leading to premature lash loss. This is why your extension cost what they do. Quality extensions and products are not cheap! Inquire about the products your technician is using and do your research to make sure you are happy with the quality of your extensions.
  2. Aftercare Routine: Adhering to a proper aftercare routine is essential for lash retention. Improper maintenance can cause extensions to fall off prematurely or damage your natural lashes. Read below for instructions on how to wash your lashes.
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
-You'll need the DBO.LASHED 3in1 lash cleanser which comes with a cleansing brush or you can use a mascara wand.
  • DBO.LASHED 3 in 1 lash cleanser
  • Cleansing brush / Mascara Wand
  • Hand fan/ Hair dryer on cool air
  • Hand towel
Step 2: Cleanse Your Lashes
Gently apply the cleansing solution to your lash extensions using the brush or wand. Use soft, downward strokes to remove dirt, oil, and makeup residue from the base of your lashes to the tips. Avoid rubbing or pulling on your extensions, as this may damage your natural lashes or weaken the adhesive bond.
Step 3: Rinse Your Lashes
Dampen a lint-free towel or microfibre cloth with warm water and gently dab your lashes to remove the cleansing solution. Alternatively, you can rinse your lashes with warm water in the shower, ensuring the water flows gently over your eyes without applying direct pressure.
Step 4: Dry Your Lashes
Gently pat your lashes with a clean, dry towel or microfibre cloth to absorb any excess moisture. Allow your lashes to air dry or use a hand fan/hair dryer on cool heat,
before brushing them with a clean, disposable mascara wand to keep them tidy and untangled.
Step 5: Repeat the Process
For best results, cleanse your lash extensions at least once or twice a week, depending on your skin type and daily activities. Be consistent with your aftercare routine to ensure long-lasting, healthy lash extensions.
By following these steps and using our cleansing products, you can maintain clean, beautiful lash extensions that last longer and minimise the risk of irritation or infection.
  1. Avoid Rubbing or Pulling on Your Lashes: Be gentle when touching your eyes, and avoid rubbing or tugging on your extensions, as this can weaken the adhesive bond and damage your natural lashes.
  2. Sleep on Your Back: Sleeping on your stomach or side may cause friction between your lashes and pillow, resulting in lash loss. Consider investing in a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction.
  3. Use Oil-Free Products: Oil-based products can break down the adhesive bond, causing extensions to fall off prematurely. Opt for oil-free makeup and skincare products.
  4. Avoid Heat and Steam: Excessive heat and steam can weaken the adhesive bond. Limit time in saunas, steam rooms, or hot yoga studios.
  5. Comb Your Lashes: Gently brush your lashes with a clean, disposable mascara wand to keep them tidy and untangled.
  6. Schedule Regular Lash Refill Appointments: As your natural lashes grow and shed, gaps can appear in your lash line. Schedule touch-up appointments every 2-3 weeks to maintain a full, uniform look.

In conclusion, understanding the factors that impact lash retention is crucial for maintaining long-lasting extensions. By selecting a skilled lash technician, investing in high-quality products, and following a proper aftercare routine, you can enjoy beautiful, full lashes for an extended period. Remember, a little love and care go a long way in preserving your stunning lash extensions!
